Wildlife

Last night we had all the windows open to try to air out the smell of paint. It was very quiet, kids were in bed, no TV on. All of the sudden I hear howling. Like really close by. I ran to get DH, and when I slid open the patio door he could hear them too. Then when I commented on how close they sounded, they stopped. DH then slid the door shut and said, well, they heard you, so I guess they are close. Like right on the other side of the tree line, in the farm field. I kept listening, after moving away from the door, and about 5 min later they picked up again.

That is why my cats are indoor cats.

We also have been host to a flock of turkeys. This is the 2nd year in a row. Last year it was 11. This year 15. I only mind them when they fly up to my deck and leave lots of feathers and poop behind.

Over the past 6 years of living here, we've seen fox cubs, deer (males, females, fawns), rabbits, squirrels, woodchucks or ground hogs, raccoons, possum, skunk, and once a coyote ran across our front yard early in the morning. We also have quite a few large hawks. The kind that would easily fly off with small dogs.

What wildlife do you see around your house?

Ack! Just reading this made me nervous. Wildlife scares me. I do love the rabbits and deer, but everything else would have me jumpy.

I live in the city, so we have cats and dogs. And birds, but nothing spectacular. Oh, I guess we did find a possum once when I was a kid. Those are nasty little critters.

Saw 5 deer this morning on my way to work. *grin*

We get everything by my house, deer, turkey, coyote, fox, raccoon, possum.

We get skunks and jackrabbits in the field across the street. Also, there are lots of cool birds - egrets, ducks, geese, owls, hawks, etc.

Mostly various fowl (lots of geese) with the occasional rabbit. Not to mention the occasional crotch-rocket rider and illegal fireworks launcher. Not too much real wildlife wants to live by I-270.

Let's see.

We regularly have rabbits, squirrels, and chipmonks making themselves very busy all around the yard. One day there was a squirrel leaning against a tree in the back yard eating a donut. I wish I'd had my camera ready - all he needed was a little cup of coffee.

We have also had raccoons, possums, and fox. Neighborhood cats and dogs. There was a coyote by my old condo but I haven't seen one here yet.

We also had a deer visit for a few weeks last spring. That was unusual because I'm not sure where she came from. I did have the camera ready for her.

We have a lot of birds. Lots and lots. We have hawks who have occasionally leave rabbit parts in the yard, and owls who leave other parts. The geese never come into our yard but there are a lot of them down the street at the park. There's a duck pair who take an afternoon through our yard every day in the spring. We have wild canaries, finches, blue jays, cardinals, mourning doves, woodpeckers, wrens, loons, and probably 10 more varieties of bird that I can't think of off the top of my head. We have a birdbath for them and it's fun to watch them splash around.

Oh yeah, I also hear a rooster crow every morning while walking the dog.

Cicadas and lizards. Other than cats. But I know that some folk on the outskirts of the city get bobcats - which are hungry and will often attack pets.

Wow! Your house could qualify as a zoo! We have those pesky coyotes, squirrels, rabbits, possums or oppossums and lizards. A lizard and her family live in our front yard. Today, I saw a whole bunch of bird feathers in one place on the lawn. I guess some animal got to a poor bird.
